RSC Anderlecht began the 1998/99 season in a disastrous manner. Under coach Arie Haan, the team managed to earn only two points from their first five matches, suffering losses including a defeat to Club Bruges and a shocking 6-0 loss to modest KVC Westerlo. In September, Haan was dismissed, and assistant coach Jean Dockx, along with Frank Vercauteren, took charge. Initially, the team continued to struggle despite the coaching change, but gradually began to climb the standings. In the final weeks of the season, Anderlecht hit their stride, defeating Standard Liege 6-0, humiliating AA Gent with a 4-0 win, and claiming a 5-2 victory over league leaders Racing Genk. On the last matchday, they still had a chance to win the title, needing both Genk and Club Brugge to falter. Ultimately, Anderlecht finished third despite their poor start to the season.
