AZ Alkmaar has been a consistent top team in the Dutch Eredivisie since 1999, winning a national championship in 2009, their first since 1981. The club's resurgence began in the mid-1990s with businessman Dirk Scheringa's involvement, who also owned and sponsored the club through DSB Bank and Frisia. AZ won the Eerste Divisie title in the 1997-98 season, securing their return to the Eredivisie. The team achieved mid-table finishes until the 2004-05 season when they placed third, their highest position in 23 years.
