In the mid-1990s, top English coach Bobby Robson was the leader of the Portuguese. Robson's health problems became more serious, so that the Englishman could not lead the team in the first matches of the 1995-1996 season. The coach returned to the saddle towards the end of the season and won the national title, 11 points ahead of Benfica. Striker Domingos Paciência was the league's top scorer, after having been crowned vice-leading scorer the previous year.
