The next major competition was held jointly with Belgium, Euro 2000, and Frank Rijkaard was the coach. In the group stage they beat the Czech Republic, Denmark and France and advanced to the quarter-finals against Yugoslavia. In this match Kluivert scored three goals, Overmars two and another own goal to finish 6-1. However, despite being the hosts, they lost to Italy in the semi-finals on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Frank de Boer, Jaap Stam and Paul Bosvelt all missed their spot-kicks. After the competition, Rijkaard resigned and was replaced by Louis van Gaal, who failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup after finishing third in the group behind Portugal and Ireland.
