Feyenoord had a partnership with Puma between 1983 and 1987, which also sponsored Cruyff. In the early 1980s, Feyenoord was sponsored by the "Gouden Gids," a Dutch guide in which consumers could find contact information for businesses. Today, these Jerseys have become classics.

The 1983-1984 Eredivisie season was a remarkable one and special for Feyenoord. A Legend of Dutch soccer, Johan Cruyff, signed a one-year commitment with the Rotterdam club. Cruyff came over from the club where he grew up and also Feyenoord's archrival, Ajax. Ajax did not want Cruyff anymore and he did not get much playing time there the previous season. Cruyff was looking for revival and where better to get that than with Feyenoord? On June 15, 1983, Cruijff signed a contract. Remarkably, he received no salary in Rotterdam. "He played based on recette. They had calculated that the previous season an average of 20,000 people came to De Kuip for and match. And so they came to the following arrangement: of every ticket above twenty thousand, Cruijff got five guilders."

Cruyff got his revival initially in the KNVB Cup, where Feyenoord eliminated Ajax in the 1/8th final. In the final against Fortuna Sittard, Feyenoord also won the Dutch Cup as top striker Peter Houtman scored the first and only goal in the 72nd minute. Besides Cruyff, Feyenoord had top Dutch players like Stanley Brard, Ruud Gullit and Ben Wijnstekers. Feyenoord finished 5 points above No. 2 PSV, thus celebrating its 12th championship.
