Under Fabio Capello's leadership, Juventus Football Club returned to domestic success in his first season as coach. The former Juventus midfielder had a positive impact on the team, leading them to what seemed like their 28th league title. However, this achievement was overshadowed a year later by the Calciopoli scandal, which relegated Juventus to Serie B. On the pitch during the 2004–05 season, the standout player was Swedish signing Zlatan Ibrahimović, who scored 16 goals in his debut Serie A season. Another key signing, Fabio Cannavaro, provided much-needed stability to the defense, which conceded only 27 goals, while the team scored 67, making Juventus the best in both defense and attack that season. The season's low point was the Champions League quarter-final exit against Liverpool. After early goals by Sami Hyypiä and Luis García at Anfield, Juventus couldn't recover, despite a second-half goal by Cannavaro. In the return leg in Turin, Ibrahimović missed a crucial opportunity, and Juventus failed to break down the organized Liverpool side, who went on to win the competition.
