On June 20, 1987, HSV won the DFB-Pokal by defeating Stuttgarter Kickers 3–1 in the final, marking their third German Cup victory. As of 2021, this remains the last major trophy the club has won. This season also marked the end of Austrian manager Ernst Happel's tenure with the club; he left to manage FC Swarovski Tirol in Austria. He was succeeded by renowned Croatian striker Josip Skoblar, who was dismissed just two months into the next season.
