Internazionale, the defending champions, replaced their center-forward Ramón Díaz with Jürgen Klinsmann, who had consistently scored over 15 goals per season in the German league since 1985. Klinsmann quickly demonstrated his abilities by scoring twice in the Coppa Italia. However, Internazionale’s European campaign was disappointing, as they were eliminated in the first round by Malmö, who won 1–0 in Sweden and drew 1–1 in Milan, knocking out Trapattoni's team. Although Internazionale won the domestic supercup, they struggled with the partnership between Klinsmann and Aldo Serena and were unable to compete effectively against Milan and Napoli. As a result, they finished the league in third place.
