In the 1999–2000 season, Córdoba CF returned to the Segunda División after 17 years, finishing 12th under manager José Tomás Escalante. Playing their home matches at Estadio Nuevo Arcángel, the team struggled in the Copa del Rey, exiting in the first round. This season followed their historic promotion, known as the "Cartagenazo," where they secured their place in the second division by defeating Cartagonova 2–1 on June 30, 1999, marking a significant resurgence in the club's history.
