In the 1997–98 season, Benfica endured a turbulent campaign marked by managerial changes but ultimately finished 2nd in the Primeira Divisão, securing Champions League qualification. Manuel José started as coach but was quickly replaced by Mário Wilson, before Graeme Souness took charge in November. Early struggles included elimination from the UEFA Cup first round by Bastia and disciplinary issues, but winter signings like Karel Poborský and Brian Deane sparked a revival. Benfica reached the Taça de Portugal semi-finals, losing to Braga, and ended the league strongly with a 7–1 win over Leça. Nuno Gomes was the standout striker, scoring 22 goals across all competitions.
