Real Madrid had a challenging 1993-94 season, finishing fourth in La Liga and extending their league title drought to four years. The team struggled early on, nearly falling into the relegation zone after losing three out of four league matches. In March, manager Benito Floro was dismissed following a 2-1 defeat to UE Lleida, and Vicente del Bosque was appointed as interim manager until June 30, 1994, when Jorge Valdano, a former club legend, took over. The club faced disappointing exits from major competitions, being eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Tenerife with a 1–5 aggregate score in the quarter-finals, and from the European Cup Winners' Cup by Paris Saint-Germain, losing 1–2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals. The season's only successes were winning the 1993 Supercopa de España and the 1994 Copa Iberoamericana.
