In the 1998-1999 season, Sparta Rotterdam struggled under coach Hans van der Zee, leading to his dismissal in December. Replacing him, Jan Everse helped the team avoid relegation by winning the promotion playoffs. Sparta finished 17th in the Eredivisie, forcing them into a relegation battle, but they secured their survival in the final match against FC Groningen.
