Swede Bo Johansson took over as coach of Denmark and implemented a more attacking style of play, leveraging the talents of the Laudrup brothers. On the second-to-last matchday, Denmark secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Croatia, eliminating them from contention for the top spot in the group. The final match against Greece, with Denmark holding a two-point lead, was tense. Despite Greece's pressure, goalkeeper Schmeichel made several important saves, allowing Denmark to secure the necessary point for qualification. The start of the 1998 World Cup was underwhelming for Denmark, with a narrow win over Saudi Arabia (1-0), a draw against South Africa (1-1), and a loss to France (1-2), leading them to the playoffs. In the playoffs, Denmark started strongly against Olympic champions Nigeria, taking a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes and ultimately winning 4-1, with substitute Ebbe Sand scoring a goal just 30 seconds after coming on.
