After a disappointing previous season, Inter Milan welcomed Marcello Lippi as their new coach. They made a significant signing by acquiring striker Christian Vieri from Lazio for a record-breaking fee of €49,000,000. Other notable acquisitions included Di Biagio, Peruzzi, Blanc, Panucci, Jugović, with Iván Córdoba and Seedorf added in the winter transfer window. Vieri made an immediate impact, scoring five goals in the opening month of the league, propelling Inter to the top of the standings. However, injuries to Vieri and his strike partner Ronaldo during autumn derailed Inter's momentum. They eventually slipped down the table, with Lazio and Juventus overtaking them, leaving Inter in fourth place. In a playoff for the final Champions League spot, Inter defeated Parma 3–1, with Roberto Baggio scoring two goals in his farewell appearance for the club. Despite this, Inter missed out on winning the Coppa Italia, losing the final to Lazio with an aggregate score of 2–1.
