Carbone began his football journey with Torino, where he was scouted during a youth tournament while playing for A.S. Scilla Calcio, an amateur youth team based in Scilla. He made his Serie A debut for Torino on January 15, 1989, against Pisa, and went on to feature in three more games that season. In the summer of 1994, Carbone was acquired by Roma; however, shortly after, he was involved in a transfer with Napoli that saw Daniel Fonseca move to Roma. Carbone's transfer to Napoli was valued at 7.5billion lire. During his time with Napoli, he made 29 league appearances and scored four goals, in addition to featuring in five UEFA Cup matches where he scored three goals, donning the number 10 shirt. His teammates praised him for his exceptional technical abilities and skills.
