In the 1986–87 season, Arsenal finished 4th in the First Division and won the League Cup, marking their first major trophy in eight years. Under new manager George Graham, the team showed early promise, leading the league from November to January, but injuries and a 10-match winless run dashed their title hopes. Their League Cup campaign was dramatic, featuring comebacks against Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals and Liverpool in the final, where Charlie Nicholas scored twice to secure victory. In the 1987–88 season, Arsenal finished 6th in the First Division, a drop from the previous year’s 4th-place finish. They reached the League Cup final for the second consecutive season but lost 3-2 to Luton Town, despite leading 2-1 and missing a crucial penalty. Their FA Cup run ended in the quarter-finals against Nottingham Forest. Arsenal started the league campaign slowly but then went on a club-record 14-match winning streak between September and November, briefly topping the table. However, a poor mid-season run saw them win just one of their next 11 league games, leading to their eventual sixth-place finish.
