This marked Zdenek Zeman's final season as coach; he would be succeeded by Fabio Capello the following year. Notably, on October 31, 1998, Francesco Totti took over the captaincy from Aldair. Marco Delvecchio was the season's top scorer, netting 23 goals—18 in the league, 1 in the Coppa Italia, and 4 in the UEFA Cup. In the Coppa Italia, the Giallorossi advanced to the round of 16 by eliminating Chievo Verona but were knocked out by Atalanta in the following round on penalties.
