In the 1993–94 season, Athletic Bilbao finished 5th in La Liga, securing a spot in the 1994–95 UEFA Cup after five seasons without European competition. Under Jupp Heynckes, the team showed steady improvement, but their Copa del Rey campaign ended in the fourth round against Real Zaragoza. Despite their league success, Heynckes left at the end of the season to join Eintracht Frankfurt, with Javier Irureta appointed as his replacement.
