In the 1995–96 season, Athletic Bilbao, under head coach Dragoslav Stepanović, began their La Liga campaign with a promising 4–0 victory over Racing Santander. However, the team's performance declined, leading to Stepanović's dismissal in March 1996. José María Amorrortu took over as caretaker manager, guiding the team to a 15th-place finish, narrowly avoiding relegation. In the Copa del Rey, Athletic Bilbao reached the Round of 16 but were eliminated by Real Zaragoza. Midfielders Julen Guerrero and Cuco Ziganda were the team's top scorers, each contributing nine league goals. Following the season, Luis Fernández was appointed as the new head coach.
