In the 1994-95season, the club were initially coached by Colombian Francisco Maturana, who after six defeats in nine games was replaced by Argentine Jorge D'Alessandro, who was still under contract last season. D'Alessandro's debut was bitter, however, as the team lost the derbi madrileño 4-2to Real Madrid. However, Atlético managed to turn things around and recorded four good results in a row. On Feb. 19, after the defeat in the closing minutes against Real Sociedad, D'Alessandro was relieved of his duties and compatriot Alfio Basile was called up in his place. The former Argentine national coach alternated wins and losses and after the elimination in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey by Albacete and the defeat against Compostela, President Gil dismissed him and summoned Carlos Sánchez Aguiar until the end of the season. In the end, Atleti finished 14th.
