In the 1997–98 season, FC Utrecht finished 10th in the Eredivisie with 43 points from 34 matches (13 wins, 4 draws, 17 losses). The campaign was turbulent, marked by managerial changes, defensive struggles, and a humiliating early KNVB Cup exit to amateur side Noordwijk.

The season began with Ronald Spelbos as head coach, but he was dismissed in October after poor results. Interim coach Nol de Ruiter briefly stabilized the team before Mark Wotte took over in January. Despite the chaos, the team ended on a high with a historic 2–1 away win over Ajax — their first in Amsterdam in 27 years.

Michael Mols was the standout performer, scoring 16 league goals and earning a call-up to the Dutch national team. The squad also featured Mitchell van der Gaag, Scott Booth (on loan from Borussia Dortmund), and young debutants like Pascal Bosschaart and Dennis van der Ree.
