After qualifying for Euro 1996 alongside Croatia, Italy was eliminated in the group stage. They won against Russia 2–1 but lost to the Czech Republic by the same score. Needing a win in their final match to advance, Italy drew 0–0 with Germany, where Gianfranco Zola missed a crucial penalty; Germany went on to win the tournament. In the qualification for the 1998 World Cup, Italy finished second behind England but secured their place in the finals by defeating Russia in a playoff, with Pierluigi Casiraghi scoring the decisive goal in a 2–1 aggregate victory. Italy topped their group and beat Norway in the second round, but faced a penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals for the third consecutive World Cup. In that match, they drew 0–0 with the eventual champions, France, after extra time but lost 4–3 in penalties. Roberto Baggio, who scored two goals in the tournament, became the only Italian player to score in three different FIFA World Cups.
