The 1996-97 season was not particularly successful for Napoli. They finished 13th in the league standings. Despite this, the club made an impressive run in the Coppa Italia, eliminating Lazio and Inter in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. However, they faced defeat in the final match. Playing in Napoli's midfield during this season was Brazilian player Beto, who was acquired from Botafogo. After making 22 appearances for Napoli, Beto returned to his homeland and joined Gremio.
