Jupp Heynckes became Bayern Munich's coach in 1987 and led the team to back-to-back championships in 1988–89 and 1989–90. However, performance declined, culminating in a near relegation in 1991–92. In 1993–94, they were eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Norwich City. Franz Beckenbauer stepped in mid-season and secured a championship after a four-year gap before becoming club president. His successors, Giovanni Trapattoni and Otto Rehhagel, both failed to win any trophies, leading to the team's reputation as "FC Hollywood" due to off-field distractions. Beckenbauer returned briefly as caretaker and won the UEFA Cup in 1996. Trapattoni came back to win the championship in 1996-97, but Bayern lost the title to Kaiserslautern the following season, resulting in Trapattoni's second departure.
