In the 1996-97 season, Parma finished second in the championship, earning them a spot in the debut season of the Champions League in 1997-98. They secured their passage to the Champions League group stage with a convincing win over Widzew Lodz. Parma began their campaign with a draw against Atalanta and a goalless draw against Sparta Prague. They then defeated Galatasaray and reigning champions Borussia Dortmund to take control of their group. Despite losing to Inter in Serie A and facing setbacks in the Champions League, Parma remained hopeful of qualification. However, draws against Sparta Prague and Galatasaray ultimately led to their exclusion from the Champions League quarter-finals. In the Italian Cup, they were eliminated by Milan in the semi-finals. Parma finished sixth in Serie A, securing a spot in the UEFA Cup, but manager Ancelotti was sacked amid conflicts with the management.
