The match went to extra time but remained scoreless, leading to penalties where Cocu and Ronald de Boer missed crucial shots. In the third-place playoff, they were defeated by Croatia 2-1. Bergkamp finished as the second top scorer of the competition with five goals, just behind Davor Šuker who scored six.
