Real Betis’ 1995–97 period under Lorenzo Serra Ferrer marked one of the club’s brightest spells of the 1990s, as they consolidated themselves in La Liga and made a serious push for silverware. In 1995–96, Betis finished 8th in the league with 62 points and enjoyed a run in the UEFA Cup, reaching the third round before falling to Bordeaux, with Alfonso beginning to emerge as the team’s talisman alongside Pier, Robert Jarni, and goalkeeper Pedro Jaro. Building on that foundation, the 1996–97 season was even more impressive: Betis climbed to 4th in La Liga with 77 points, securing European qualification, and reached the Copa del Rey final, narrowly losing 3–2 after extra time to Barcelona. The side was powered by Alfonso’s prolific 25 league goals, the creativity of Finidi George (signed from Ajax), the versatility of Jarni, and the defensive leadership of Roberto Ríos and Risto Vidaković, with Toni Prats excelling in goal.
