Scotland secured their place at the 1990 FIFA World Cup by finishing second in UEFA Group 5, behind Yugoslavia. Under manager Andy Roxburgh, the team showed resilience and tactical discipline throughout the qualifiers. Mo Johnston emerged as a key figure, scoring six goals, including decisive strikes against France and Cyprus. Despite a 3–0 loss to France in their final match, Scotland’s earlier consistency ensured their ticket to Italy, marking their fifth consecutive World Cup appearance.
Scotland – 1990 FIFA World Cup (Group C):
In the tournament itself, Scotland was placed in Group C alongside Brazil, Sweden, and Costa Rica. Their campaign began with a shock 1–0 defeat to Costa Rica, followed by a hard-fought 2–1 win over Sweden that reignited hopes of progression. However, a narrow 1–0 loss to Brazil in their final group match ended their journey prematurely. Despite flashes of promise, Scotland once again fell short of reaching the knockout stage, continuing a frustrating World Cup pattern.
