In the 1995/96 season, Ajax reached the Champions League final but lost to Juventus after a penalty shootout. In December 2005, there was brief speculation about Ajax possibly being awarded the cup due to doping suspicions against Juventus. After that season, several key players left Ajax: Sonny Silooy went to Arminia Bielefeld, Edgar Davids and Michael Reiziger joined AC Milan, and Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George moved to Inter and Real Betis Sevilla, respectively. Despite reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 1996/97, Ajax only finished 4th in the league that year.
