The 1999–2000 season proved to be another disappointing chapter for AS Roma as they continued their title drought, ultimately finishing in a frustrating 6th place in Serie A. Despite the arrival of new manager Fabio Capello, the team struggled to make an immediate impact, actually slipping one spot in the league standings. Despite the impressive performance of Vincenzo Montella, who scored 18 goals after joining from Sampdoria, Roma failed to achieve the desired results. However, Capello's implementation of a new 3–4–1–2system laid the groundwork for success in the following season, with the arrival of key signings Gabriel Batistuta, Walter Samuel, and Emerson bolstering the squad. Although the 1999–2000 campaign ended without silverware, Roma's fortunes would change in 2000–01as they clinched the league title.
