Belgium played in the 1994 World Cup qualifying period in Jerseys by Italian brand Diadora. However, the draw for the qualifying round proved challenging, with Romania and Czechoslovakia, both participants in the previous World Cup, and Wales, who had beaten Belgium in European Championship qualification, as opponents. Belgium started qualifying strongly with victories over smaller opponents and an important away win over Czechoslovakia. At home, they welcomed Gheorghe Hagi's Romanian team, which played well but missed many chances, while Rudi Smidts scored the winning goal for Belgium. However, after six consecutive wins, Belgium suffered defeats against Wales and Romania, making qualification exciting again. On the final matchday, Belgium played against the now disintegrated Czechoslovakia. The match ended in a scoreless draw, meaning Belgium still managed to qualify for the World Cup for the fourth time in a row.
