In the 1997-1998 season, AC Milan, aiming to improve upon their 11th-place finish from the previous year, welcomed back Fabio Capello as coach. Paolo Maldini assumed the captaincy following Franco Baresi's retirement. The team saw several new arrivals, including Roberto Donadoni, Christian Ziege, and Patrick Kluivert, while others departed, such as Edgar Davids and Roberto Baggio. Milan's league campaign ended disappointingly in 10th place, with notable losses to Roma, Inter, and Juventus.

In the Coppa Italia, Milan reached the final after defeating Reggiana and Sampdoria and winning convincingly against Inter in the quarter-final. However, they lost to Lazio in the final, despite winning the first leg. The season concluded with the departure of coach Capello.
