Everton's season underscored their decline from recent glory days, as they were embroiled in a relegation battle just a few years after being league champions. However, another poor run ensued, and Everton fell into the relegation zone with one game remaining. On the final day, Everton trailed Wimbledon 2-0, facing potential relegation. A remarkable comeback saw them win 3-2, and with favorable results in other matches, they secured their safety. Sheffield United and Oldham Athletic were relegated instead.
