Between 1988 and 1990, Portugal went through one of the most turbulent and disappointing periods in their modern football history. The national team was still recovering from the fallout of the Saltillo Affair at the 1986 World Cup, which fractured squad unity and damaged the federation’s structure. As a result, the late‑80s team lacked stability, consistency, and the sharpness of the emerging Golden Generation that would arrive later in the decade.

During 1990 World Cup qualification (UEFA Group 7), Portugal struggled badly. They finished 4th in a group with Czechoslovakia, Belgium, and Switzerland, winning only 2 of 8 matches. The team scored just 6 goals and conceded 11, reflecting a campaign defined by low creativity and limited attacking threat. Despite talented individuals — especially Futre, Rui Águas, and Dito — Portugal never found rhythm. Key defeats to Belgium and Switzerland, plus a costly home draw against Luxembourg, sealed their fate early.

This period is remembered as the bridge between two eras: the decline after 1986 and the rise of the Golden Generation that would soon transform Portuguese football.
