The 1992–93 season marked the beginning of Le Classique, the intense rivalry between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille, as both teams competed for the French Division 1 title. PSG finished as runners-up after losing both encounters against Marseille. The pivotal match took place just three days after Marseille's victory in the 1992–93 UEFA Champions League, with league leaders Marseille hosting their closest challengers, PSG. Following Marseille's fifth consecutive championship, the club, led by Bernard Tapie, was found guilty of match-fixing in what became known as the French football bribery scandal. As a result, the French Football Federation stripped Marseille of the title and offered it to PSG. However, the club declined the trophy, as Canal+, the club's owners, believed it would upset their subscribers in Marseille. Consequently, the 1992–93 title remained vacant, and Canal+ even prevented PSG from participating in the following year's UEFA Champions League, which allowed Monaco, finishing third in Ligue 1, to take the Champions League spot instead.

Considered the club's golden era, the 1990s saw PSG win nine trophies and reach five consecutive European semi-finals, including their first appearance in the last four of the UEFA Champions League and two similar runs in the UEFA Cup. PSG's crowning achievement came in the 1996 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final, with Luis Fernandez as coach. Bruno Ngotty scored the only goal of the match, securing a victory over Rapid Wien and making PSG the second French club to win a major European tournament, as well as the youngest club in history to claim a European title at just 26 years of existence. The following season, PSG finished as runners-up in both the 1996 UEFA Super Cup and the 1997 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final. Domestically, their success continued with a second league title, three French Cups, two French League Cups, and the same number of French Super Cup wins.
