Rangers’ 1999–2000 season was one of complete domestic dominance under Dick Advocaat. After securing the treble the previous year, Rangers successfully defended their Scottish Premier League title, finishing comfortably ahead of Celtic and scoring an incredible 106 league goals. The team blended international stars with Scottish talent, playing attacking football led by captain Barry Ferguson, prolific striker Michael Mols, and winger Neil McCann. A serious knee injury to Mols in October threatened to derail the campaign, but Rangers’ depth proved too strong for domestic rivals. They also won the Scottish Cup, completing a domestic double, while making an impact in Europe through the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup. The season reinforced Rangers' status as Scotland’s dominant force at the turn of the millennium.

Rangers’ 2000–01 season was a frustrating one by their standards, as their dominance of Scottish football came to an abrupt halt. After winning the league and cup double the previous year, Dick Advocaat’s side struggled for consistency and ultimately finished 2nd in the Scottish Premier League, ending their run of titles as Celtic surged under Martin O’Neill. Despite boasting a star-studded squad featuring Barry Ferguson, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ronald de Boer, Rangers frequently dropped points in key matches and lost all four Old Firm league meetings. Their biggest success came in the Scottish Cup, which they won by defeating Hibernian 3–0 in the final. In Europe, Rangers reached the UEFA Cup fourth round, showing flashes of quality but failing to translate them into domestic supremacy. The season is remembered as the year Celtic wrestled control of Scottish football away from Rangers.
