During the 2000–01 season, Saint-Étienne faced tumult with five different managers overseeing the team amid a scandal involving players Alex Dias and Maksym Levytsky using counterfeit passports. Both players received four-month suspensions, and an investigation implicated club management in the passport fraud. As a consequence, Saint-Étienne was penalized seven league points and relegated. Following three seasons in Ligue 2, Saint-Étienne returned to Ligue 1 for the 2004–05 season.
