Scotland entered the 1978 World Cup in Argentina with enormous hype and belief, fuelled by manager Ally MacLeod’s public confidence and a squad stacked with elite players from Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. Expectations were sky‑high after a strong qualifying campaign, but the tournament quickly turned into a cautionary tale. Scotland opened with a 3–1 defeat to Peru, a match they had badly underestimated, followed by a disappointing 1–1 draw with Iran, leaving qualification hanging by a thread. In their final group game, Scotland produced one of their most famous World Cup performances, beating the Netherlands 3–2 thanks to Archie Gemmill’s iconic solo goal, but they still failed to advance due to goal difference.
