The 1990s saw the farewell of idol Roberto Dinamite in 1993 and the rise of new stars like Edmundo, Felipe, Pedrinho, and Juninho Pernambucano. Vasco da Gama began a series of state championship victories in 1992, completing the tri-state championship with wins in 1993 and 1994. In 1997, propelled by Edmundo's brilliant performance, they won their third Brazilian Championship, defeating Palmeiras in the final. Following this success, Vasco launched the "Projeto Tóquio," investing $10 million to win the 1998 Copa Libertadores. In their centenary year, Vasco won the Copa Libertadores, beating Barcelona of Ecuador 4-1 on aggregate, 50 years after their first South American trophy. This victory set up a match against Real Madrid, the 1997-98 UEFA Champions League winners, in the 1998 Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo, where Vasco lost 2-1.
