The 1997-1998 season was a memorable one for Athletic Bilbao. Under the guidance of head coach Luis Fernández, the team achieved remarkable success. They finished as runners-up in La Liga, just behind Barcelona, which secured them a spot in the 1998-1999 UEFA Champions League. This was their highest league finish since their last La Liga triumph in 1984.

In the Copa del Rey, Athletic Bilbao reached the quarterfinals for the first time since the 1994-1995 season. They were eliminated by Mallorca on away goals. In the UEFA Cup, they faced Sampdoria in the first round and secured a 2-1 victory in Genoa, followed by a 2-0 win at San Mamés. However, their journey ended in the second round against Aston Villa.

The team's top goalscorer was Joseba Etxeberria, who netted 11 goals in La Liga and 13 in all competitions. The squad's strong performance and determination made the 1997-1998 season one to remember for Athletic Bilbao fans.
