After a 40-year hiatus, Brazil claimed victory in the 1989 Copa América, marking their fourth win in the four tournaments hosted in Brazil. This triumph ended Brazil's 19-year championship drought, with their last title being the 1970 World Cup. In the 1990 World Cup held in Italy, Brazil was coached by Sebastião Lazaroni, a relatively unknown figure before the tournament. Employing a defensive strategy led by midfielder Dunga, forward Careca, and three full-backs, the team lacked creativity but advanced to the second round. Similar to their experience in Mexico, Brazil played all their matches at Juventus' Stadio delle Alpi in Turin. They won all three group stage matches against Sweden (2–1), Costa Rica (1–0), and Scotland (1-0). During the match against Scotland, a powerful free-kick by Branco struck Scottish midfielder Murdo MacLeod, knocking him out cold. In the second round, Brazil faced Argentina. Despite applying heavy pressure and creating numerous scoring opportunities against a weaker Argentine side, Brazil was eliminated when Claudio Caniggia scored following a brilliant assist from Diego Maradona.
