RCD Espanyol’s 1996–97 season was a mid‑table campaign in which the club finished 12th in La Liga with 51 points, showing strong home form but struggling away. They reached the Copa del Rey quarter‑finals and advanced to the UEFA Cup second round, where they were eliminated by Feyenoord. The season featured three different managers and relied heavily on key performers such as top scorer Jordi Lardín and defensive leader Mauricio Pochettino.
