In the 1998–99 season, RCD Espanyol finished 7th in La Liga, securing qualification for the Intertoto Cup third round. The club had a stable campaign, maintaining a strong defensive record while struggling for consistency in attack. Their Copa del Rey run ended in the quarter-finals, and they reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Intertoto Cup, falling short of European qualification. The season saw managerial changes, with Marcelo Bielsa leaving in October and Miguel Ángel Brindisi taking over.
