The Rotterdam club became Dutch champions in 1999, earning a place in the UEFA Champions League.Feyenoord managed to finish second in the first group stage of the Champions League, in a group with Rosenborg, Borussia Dortmund and Boavista, and qualify for the second round. In the second round, Feyenoord won against Lazio Roma and Marseille, but this proved not enough to reach the quarter-finals.
In 1999, Jan de Visser made the move to Feyenoord. Unfortunately, this period at the Rotterdam club was not considered a particularly successful phase in his career. In his first season at Feyenoord he still played a respectable twenty-six games, but in the following two seasons his commitment diminished.
