Stunning away shirt which would be the last of the 4 year sponsor deal with Kappa. Just before the well known classics from Umbro will start. Very remarkable design from Kappa with the logos all over the sleeves.

The season just after the lost Europa Cup II final versus Mechelen, Ajax tried to make another successful season. However, after the departure of big players like Marco van Basten, Silooy, and Rijkaard, some poor years started for Ajax. After Ajax was ranked 14th after six games in 1988/89, coach Kurt Linder and the board drew their consequences and made their positions available. Coach Kurt Linder resigned on Sept. 20, 1988.

The club began to improve again when Spitz Kohn was appointed interim coach on Oct. 8, 1988. Youth coach Louis van Gaal became his assistant. In the 1988/89 season, after a dramatic start in the first 7 rounds (4 defeats and 1 draw, goal difference -2), still 11 league matches in a series of 12 games were won, still reaching the second place , with a slight gap to number 1, PSV. Ajax had now finished 2nd in the premier league 4 times in a row, always behind number 1, PSV.
