The club's predecessor was called Beijing Football Club and they predominantly played in the top tier, where they won several domestic league and cup titles. On December 29, 1992,[3] the club was recognized to become a completely professional football club, making them one of the founding members of the first fully professional top-tier league in China. The club became national champions in 2009 . This is the club's first title since the professionalisation of Chinese football and the second title of the millennium. However, the club disappointed the following season by finishing 5th in the championship. The team had a good period between 2011 and 2015. For instance, it finished second twice (2011 and 2014), third in 2012 and 2013 and finally fourth in 2015.
