England’s Euro 2008 campaign ended in disappointment as they failed to qualify from Group E, despite winning 7 of their 12 matches. England finished 3rd with 23 points, behind Croatia (29 points) and Russia (24 points). Key victories included a 5–0 win over Andorra, a 1–0 away win over North Macedonia, and a 3–0 home win over Russia, but costly setbacks proved decisive. Defeats to Croatia, including the crucial 3–2 loss at Wembley on 21 November 2007, combined with Russia’s qualification-clinching win over Andorra, left England out of the finals in Austria and Switzerland. It was England’s first failure to qualify for a European Championship since 1984 and led to the departure of Steve McClaren as manager.
