After a disappointing previous season, Inter underwent significant changes with the appointment of Marcello Lippi as their new coach. The club made headlines by splurging €49,000,000 to secure the services of striker Christian Vieri from Lazio, a transfer that shattered the world record at the time. Additionally, they made several other key signings including Di Biagio, Peruzzi, Blanc, Panucci, Jugović, and later Iván Córdoba and Seedorf in the winter transfer window.

Vieri quickly proved his worth by becoming a prolific goalscorer, netting five times in the opening month of the league and guiding Inter to the top of the standings. However, injuries to both Vieri and his strike partner Ronaldo during autumn disrupted Inter's momentum, and they eventually slipped down the table. Lazio and Juventus overtook them, relegating Lippi's side to fourth place.
