Plymouth Argyle endured a difficult 1996–97 season in the Second Division, narrowly avoiding relegation after finishing 19th with 54 points. The campaign was turbulent both on and off the pitch. Manager Neil Warnock was sacked in February and replaced by his assistant Mick Jones, while Argyle won just 12 of their 46 league matches. Despite reaching the FA Cup third round and the Football League Trophy quarter-finals, survival was the main achievement. The season is also remembered for the infamous"Battle of Saltergate" against Chesterfield in February 1997, when five players were sent off, the first time in Football League history that this had happened in a single match. Top scorer Mickey Evans finished with 15 goals in all competitions and played a key role in keeping Argyle clear of the relegation places.
