Following the 1998 World Cup in France, Guus Hiddink resigned as the Netherlands' national coach and joined Real Madrid shortly after. Despite welcoming notable players like Clarence Seedorf and Samuel Eto'o, Eto'o struggled to make an impact and was eventually loaned out. Hiddink's stint at Real Madrid was brief, marked by mixed fortunes. Real Madrid lost to Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup but later clinched their first trophy of the season by defeating Vasco da Gama in the World Club Cup.
However, Hiddink's tenure was short-lived as he was sacked in February 1999, following a qualification to the Copa del Rey semi-finals. John Toshack replaced him but faced challenges as Real Madrid suffered heavy defeats, including a 6-0 loss to Valencia in the Copa del Rey semi-final. Additionally, they were eliminated from the Champions League quarter-finals by Dynamo Kiev, led by Andrij Shevchenko.
In the league, Real Madrid finished as runners-up, trailing FC Barcelona by 11points. Raúl emerged as the top scorer, winning the Trofeo Pichichi.
